How I Landed My First Client
A no BS advice to convert your skills in to a monetized business
Hi friend,
A few weeks back I created sections for YOU readers, to choose and select the kind of stories you want to read from me. This section Solopreneur Unfiltered will provide no BS advice on Solopreneurship. If you are someone who is looking to start a business on the side or has had it with working in corporate and want to move on, this is for YOU.
I was in the second category, I was done slogging for corporate and I was ready to do anything, literally anything to get it off my back.
With zero to no idea about running a business, it was a hit and trial for me, this may not be the best method out there, but here is what I did to get a client for my ghostwriting business.
Practice
I practiced writing for myself, did a lot of shitty pieces, and eventually got better.
I practiced in public, wrote on public platforms, got love, hate, and criticism, and took it all in.
Build an offer
If you are not a celebrity or child of a celebrity, no one cares about what you do no matter how good you are. Period.
Let that sink in…
Now, you need to have an offer so people can know what you do and how you can be of help to them, so they would be willing to pay you for your service/product.
What can you offer?
There are only 2 types of things you can sell online- a product or a service, decide how best you can help your clients.
Build clarity on your offer-
Write down the before and after.
- What state are people in BEFORE buying from you? (Your Audience)
- What state people will be AFTER they buy from you? (Your Offer)
Now that you have clarity on exactly what you want to offer, spread the word.
There are many platforms for you to sell your services, I am good with LinkedIn, so I am going to talk about LinkedIn.
Step 1- Change your headline to this- I <Your Offer> for <Your Audience>
You already have clarity on these two.
Step 2- Write a post on LinkedIn not just anything, but specifically about the pain points of your audience that you are offering to solve.
Your post should be free-flowing, not salesy at all, you are just existing, telling people what you do casually, basically flirting like a Brit!
When in doubt, copy any of Tim Denning’s posts, I like his badass style. Or pick any of your fav creator’s posts and modify them to fit your style.
DM People
Posting alone won’t get you so far, you need to talk to actual people. Look, let's be real here — sliding into those DMs might feel cringey as hell, but guess what? That's how you're gonna land clients when nobody knows your name yet.
When you DM, don’t just blabber, we are still following dating advice from English Man Mike, we need to exist but still be aloof, play it cool you know.
Here’s what you will say -
Hey <Name>. I’m doing <Your offer in one word> where I help people to <Your offer in a little elaborate form(1 sentence)>. Do you know anyone who might want to join?
More often than not, the people you are DMing, are the ones that will convert, but just the way you approach matters. Approach people with an abundance mindset, not with a scarcity mindset.
Well, that’s it, that’s how I got my first client. Simple, no BS advice, plus you have a little humor, what can be better than to read something that educates and entertains, well that’s how I roll.
Even if you don’t want to believe that this might work for you, just give it a try. It is better to try something than sitting with a $1000 skill up your sleeve.
Let me know in the comments if you tried this method and got a response. Ill be super excited to know your story :)
